Matthew Carter designed Shelley Allegro, the mid-tempo, ornamental variant within the Shelley Script family, for Linotype in 1972 as a faithful revival of 18th-century English Roundhand calligraphy penned by writing master George Shelley.

While it shares the exact same elegant, fluid lowercase characters as the rest of the family, its defining feature lies in its moderately flourishing uppercase letters. It strikes a perfect middle ground between the reserved style of Shelley Andante and the theatrical, swirling swashes of Shelley Volante.
