What Is Zalgo Text, and Where Did It Come From?

Zalgo text works by stacking Unicode "combining marks" — the same category of character used to add an accent to a letter, like the mark that turns e into é — above, below, and through a single letter, over and over. A rendering engine will keep stacking marks as long as you keep adding them, which is exactly why the text appears to break out of its own line the heavier you go.

The name comes from an internet horror character from mid-2000s creepypasta forums, often paired with the phrase "he comes." The corrupted-text style stuck to the name and has been a staple of internet horror aesthetics, ARGs, and glitch-themed content ever since.

Practical Warnings Before You Post

  • Username and bio fields often clip it: Many platforms, including Discord, only render the first few marks on each letter in name fields and silently cut the rest. Full posts and messages are usually more forgiving. Test a short sample in the exact field first.
  • It can eat into character limits: Every mark still counts as a character on most platforms, so a heavily glitched short word can use up far more of a character limit than it looks like it should.
