What You Can Type With IBM Plex Mono

You get every letter from A to Z in both cases and all the numbers from 0 to 9, which means IBM Plex Mono can handle full sentences, dates and prices. Common punctuation such as &, !, ? and @ is included as well. It also has the accented letters you need for Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Italian. On top of that, it includes Cyrillic characters. Of its 1,028 glyphs, about 101 are not on your keyboard at all. That is where the alternates explained below live.

How to Use the Alternate Letters in IBM Plex Mono

IBM Plex Mono has stylistic alternates and 5 stylistic sets built in as OpenType features. In Illustrator and InDesign, open the Glyphs panel (Window > Type) and select a letter to see its alternates. In Photoshop, use Window > Glyphs. Figma shows them under the text settings as OpenType features. Microsoft Word can switch on stylistic sets in the Font dialog under Advanced. Canva and Cricut Design Space can't reach OpenType alternates, so for those, set the word in a desktop app first and import it as an SVG. Every character takes the same width, so columns, tables and code line up perfectly.

Where IBM Plex Mono Works Best

IBM Plex Mono is a natural fit for websites, app screens and clean logos. The file has no kerning data, so in logos and big titles check pairs like AV, To and Wa and tighten the spacing by hand. It works for headings and body text alike. If the download has several weights, use a heavier one for titles and a lighter one for paragraphs. Because the family has more than one style, you can mix them in a single design for headings, subheadings and highlights.
