Swiss typographer Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann designed the typeface in 1957 at the Haas Type Foundry. They originally named it Neue Haas Grotesk.
In 1960, the foundry renamed the font Helvetica (derived from Helvetia, the Latin name for Switzerland). They made this change to increase its appeal for international marketing.
The designers built the typeface to embody the International Typographic Style, also known as Swiss Design.
