What You Can Type With Chinal
With complete upper and lowercase letters and all ten digits, Chinal is ready for real wording, not just a single headline. Common punctuation such as &, !, ? and @ is included as well. It also has the accented letters you need for Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Italian. Of its 409 glyphs, about 46 are not on your keyboard at all. That is where the alternates explained below live.
How to Use the Alternate Letters in Chinal
Chinal has swashes and stylistic alternates built in as OpenType features. In Illustrator and InDesign, open the Glyphs panel (Window > Type) and select a letter to see its alternates. In Photoshop, use Window > Glyphs. Figma shows them under the text settings as OpenType features. Canva and Cricut Design Space can't reach OpenType alternates, so for those, set the word in a desktop app first and import it as an SVG. Ligatures and contextual alternates switch on by themselves: some letter pairs join into one shape and letters change to fit their neighbours, so repeated letters don't look copy-pasted. This works automatically in most design apps and modern browsers.
Where Chinal Works Best
Chinal is a natural fit for posters, logos and eye-catching headlines. Its lowercase letters are small compared to the capitals, so set it a size or two bigger than usual. Use it for one standout word or headline and let simpler fonts handle the rest.
